The UN has 4 main purposes: to keep peace throughout the world; to develop friendly relations among nations; to help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other's rights and freedoms; and to be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals.

Guided tours are only offered on weekdays. However, the UN Visitors Lobby with exhibits and UN Visitor Centre with UN Post Office and shops, is open on weekends, except in January and February. Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm. Saturday & Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. All visitors must exit the building by 5:30pm.
Official holidays: United Nations Headquarters is closed on the following days: year 2019, (observed) January 1, New Year's Day; April 19, Good Friday; May 27, Memorial Day; June 5, Eid al-Fitr; July 4, Independence Day; August 12, Eid al-Adha; September 7, Labor Day; November 28, Thanksgiving Day; December 25, Christmas Day.
Admission: Adults $20.00; Student (13 years+) $13.00; Senior (60 years+) $13.00; Child (5-12 years) $11.00; For security reasons, children under 5 years of age are welcome to the UN but are not permitted on tour.
