Commission on Gender Equity

Description

Established by Executive Order No. 10 in 2015 and codified into law by Local Law 67 in 2016, the Commission on Gender Equity (CGE) serves as an advisory board to the Mayor. CGE builds upon and expands the City's work on issues regarding women's rights begun by its predecessor, the Commission on Women's Issues. In order to identify and support solutions, CGE delves into the complex and multi-sectoral issues surrounding gender equity regardless of ability, age, class, immigration status, gender identity and expression, race and ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Through research and publication, policy development, legislation and advocacy, and public education programs and engagement, CGE works collaboratively with City agencies, nonprofits, and for profit organizations to advance gender equity within three areas of focus: economic mobility and opportunity, health and reproductive justice, and safety. CGE is comprised up of twenty-six Commissioners who are appointed by the Mayor, five who are appointed by the Speaker of the City Council, and the Chair of the city’s Commission on Human Rights. Commissioners represent a diverse array of ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identifications, and professions.
