Provided for in Executive Order No. 35 of 1997 and amended by Executive Order No. 53 of 2001 the Mayor's Office for International Affairs serves as the primary liaison between the City of New York and the diplomatic community, foreign governments, the United Nations and the U.S. Department of State. Through its signature initiatives: Connecting Local to Global; Global Vision | Urban Action; and the New York City Junior Ambassador’s program, the office provides a global platform to share NYC’s policies and best practices globally while working to foster positive relations and to encourage collaborations between the international community and New York City's agencies and local communities. Functions include: responding to all requests from foreign governments and the United Nations on behalf of the City; advising City agencies on diplomatic and consular matters; responding to diplomatic incidents and emergency situations that may involve foreign nations; providing guidance to the diplomatic and consular community on City issues and initiatives; fostering the exchange of economic development between cities globally; and administrating the City of New York/US Department of State Diplomatic and Consular Parking program.
