The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the largest public housing authority in North America, was created in 1935. NYCHA is a public benefit corporation, organized and existing pursuant to the Public Housing Law. NYCHA is committed to providing affordable housing and facilitating access to social and community services for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers. NYCHA connects residents to opportunities in financial empowerment, business development, career advancement, and educational programs. The NYCHA board is comprised of seven (7) members appointed by the mayor. Three (3) of the seven (7) members are NYCHA residents. The mayor designates one of the members as the chair.
